Flight Attendant

So You Want to Get Hired as a Flight Attendant? Join the LUV Crew, SWA is Hiring!

Flight AttendantGetting hired at an airline as a flight attendant is more difficult than getting into Harvard these days. It’s true, you can google it😉 Not because you need a 4.5 GPA, but because everyone wants the damn job. Why? Because it’s amazing and unique (more about that later). When I applied to be a Flight Attendant at Southwest airlines, so many people applied in the first two hours that the system crashed and the hiring pool was cut short. In two hours, Southwest had over ten thousand flight attendant applicants, and anyone who hadn’t gotten their resume in when the window first opened was out of luck.

Now it’s open again and it’s YOUR TURN to apply! Southwest learned that by leaving the window open for two days, applicants might feel less rushed to apply, flooding the system all at once as in the past. So if you’ve ever dreamed of being a flight attendant for (in my humble opinion) the best airline to work for, now is your chance to get in a resume.

Why Does Everyone Want This Job?

1. Flexibility – You choose your schedule. Even if you don’t get the schedule you want at first, flight attendants have the ability to manipulate their schedule. We’re talking days of week worked, AM versus PM, and how much someone actually wants to work. Do you want to make a boat load of money and be in a different city every night, then maybe you want to fly six days a week. Or maybe you want to work three days on and then have four off? Or maybe you want to work two weeks at the beginning of the month and have the rest of the month off? The possibilities are endless.

2. Be Your Own Boss – Although we have bosses, on the plane, we are in charge. We have safety and customer service guidelines to follow, but no one is breathing down our neck or backseat driving how we go about things. You are the one on the aircraft and YOU are being trusted to make good decisions. Basically, you’re only going to hear from your “boss” if you do something very wrong and either passengers or flight crew have reported you. This had never been a problem in my career, because honestly, as long as you love your job, you will DO a good job.

3. Is it Really Work if You’re Sitting Poolside Drinking Margaritas? – What better reason to be a flight attendant IMG_2865.JPGthan for fun layovers in cool places. Even places you never thought would be cool, might end up being your favorite new getaway. I promise you, especially as LUV Crew (aka Southwest Airlines Crew) we find a way to have an amazing time even in the tiniest of towns. Or of course you can bid to spend the night at a resort in Aruba or something. That works too. Want to go zip lining in Costa Rica? No problemo.

4. The Actual Work Part isn’t bad either – Especially if you have a fun crew (and Cohearts didn’t get that name for just any reason) work doesn’t feel like work. It feels like you’re hanging out with cool, fun people. And the passengers are invited to the party.🙂 Long flights are fun because you have a chance to hear different stories and meet super unique people. Hell, you might even meet the love of your life, I know a couple of my friends did. The hours can be long and very physical as we are often on our feet, but they don’t always feel long.

5. Every Day is Different – This is one of the things I love most. You never know what to expect from this job. What customers you’ll meet, what crew members you might fly with that become your new best friend. Maybe you’ll get to throw an inflight-party for a passenger that’s celebrating a birthday. Maybe you pop some champagne for newlyweds.  Maybe you’re supposed to spend the night in snowy New York, but end up diverting to sunny, Florida and spend your layover basking on a beach. Every day is different. Every day is a story.

Um…and did I mention the travel benefits? Go anywhere in the world for free! Well…sometimes you have to pay airport taxes😉 Check out some of my travel/nonrev posts about great destination like Scotland, Bermuda and St. Martin, to hear how much I paid, what routes I flew and how much fun I had taking advantage of my benefits, because that can be you!swa jet

Do you have a winning smile and personality? The courage the be the last line of defense in the sky? The quick-thinking and action to save a life in a medical emergency? As long as you have the desire and positive attitude, the airline can teach you the rest. Apply now and I’ll keep my fingers crossed for you!

What to Expect?

If your resume is chosen for the flight attendant position, you’ll next get a phone interview. If that goes well and they think you’re Southwest Flight Attendant material, you’ll be invited to an in-person interview.

If you get called to the in-person interview (usually it’s two on one) then you’re basically in. Show up on time (way early), look sharp in your slacks or pencil skirt, and be your charming self. This in person interview is where they’ve already vetted you out by your resume, now they just want to make sure you’re the kind of person they’d look forward to working with. 🙂

Alright, now stop wasting time and get your interview in before the window closes, it won’t be long. Get that seniority!😉

*update* SWA has closed it’s window and are beginning to call applicants back. Good luck 🙂

Good Luck and Keep In Touch
